This memorial scholarship fund began in 1968 when a group of citizens gathered together in response to a community movement to recognize and honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Dr. King's commitment to equality, justice, and peace for all people motivated the group. The focus on education is a fitting tribute to this great humanitarian and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Making education available to all people is fundamental in destroying the barriers that separate them.

The founders of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial High School Scholarship Fund include: A. J. Banks, James W. Bell, Jennie Hiltel, Maxine Lewis, Richard Wood, Rusty Duval, Dale Federer, Charles Lewin, Ren Liner and Stanley Rogers.

The first scholarship was awarded in 1969.

"We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right. Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy and transform our pending national elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood. Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity."                                                                                                                     -Martin Luther King, Jr.
