About
This memorial scholarship fund began in 1969 when a group of citizens gathered together in response to a community movement to recognize and honor the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Rev. King's commitment to equality, justice, and peace for all people motivated the group. The focus on education is a fitting tribute to this great humanitarian and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Making education available to all people is fundamental in destroying the barriers that separate them.
The founders of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial High School Scholarship Fund include: A. J. Banks, James W. Bell, Jennie Hiltel, Maxine Lewis, Richard Wood, Rusty Duval, Dale Federer, Charles Lewin, Ren Liner and Stanley Rogers.
The first scholarship was awarded in 1969. In the ensuing years the Fund has awarded more than 622 scholarships to deserving students.
"We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right. Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy and transform our pending national elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood. Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity." -Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our Vision
The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. High School Memorial Scholarship Fund puts into practice the stirring vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that Americans:
"will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
